Doireann is the proud daughter of a Scottish chieftan, her beauty renowned through the land of her father, and yet she chose to remain unbound and alone, free from submitting to the desires of any man. As the tides of war and pillage reach her homeland, she finds herself sold into the hands of the fearsome Viking pirate Thorsten, the wild leader of the frenzied Norse Bear Cult. She must survive the humiliation of being Thorsten’s woman, through pagan rituals and violent battles, as only her pride keeps her from submitting to his passion . . .

I love historical romances, but often bemoan the past few years where the majority of historical romances are 99% romance and 1% history. You often wonder why the writer bothered to set it in a historical era when they book is virtually a contemporary romance with a horse tossed in for show. I love history as much as I do the sweeping passion, so I am delighted there are still a few writers out there that remember the HISTORICAL. Maggie Davis is one of the best historical romance writers around. I love her OUT OF THE BLUE, HUSTLE SWEET LOVE and THE LAST MALE VIRGIN (rumour has it Hollywood is looking to do it as a movie - cool!!). However, I am shocked her historicals have often not gotten the attention they deserve.
The Winter Serpent is heavy on history and it is absolutely amazing!! It is a gritty story of a Scot's lass, beautiful and strong-willed, who will let no man break her pride. Dorieann is the beauty daughter of a Scots Chieftain and Pict mother. Her foster brother kills her father and assumes control of the Scots Clan. He desires Dorieann, but she refuses his advances. In his fury, he sells her to the Viking settles, fierce warriors of the Norse Bear Cult, believing she will kill herself rather than submit to them. Dorieann is surprised to learn she has been bought for Thorsten, their leader. She survives, adjusts, and earns Thorsten's approval so much that he takes her as his wife. This is not the way her stepbrother wanted her fate to go, so he begins to ferment trouble for her and the Vikings.
Maggie Davis pulls no punches as she gives you a true historical romance, full of details and realistic portrayals of a woman surviving, yet keeping her pride and spirit, making life the best she can in a world that was very harsh to woman.
Applause for her not taking the easy road, but sticking to a believable depiction of a woman of fire. So if you want more historical in your historical romance, this wonderful tale of the Scots, Picts and Vikings is just your cup of tea!

The Winter Serpent edition by Maggie Davis Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

Couldn't finish the book. Characters unpleasant and unlikable; plot boring; writing confusing; story transitions choppy.
Story line could have been better. Some characters needed more development but it was good entertainment.
This book had me thinking long after I finished reading it - always a good sign. Historically it had a ring of truth and whilst the characters were not exactly relateable - that was the beauty of the book. How on earth could we as a modern people relate? Was this a story of survival - yes, in a time that is completely alien to us but yet it made me pause and think, yes this is how it could have been in that century in that time. I know I will re-read this book time and time again.
5 stars for the historical factor. 3 stars for the story line. Average is 4 stars.
I loved the historical information in the story, but the story line seemed choppy to me. There would be a change of thought and plot line from one paragraph to the next. The story centers around Doireann nighean Muireach and her connection to the Vikking Thorsten Ljot. It starts with the selling of Doireann by her cousin to the Vikkings (in an attempt to shame her), her eventual return to her own people and the political intrgue of the various clans/kings she is kin with. All this while Thorsten seeks her return amongst the raiding, sacking, plundering, etc...that Vikkings are known for. I personally would label this book as Historical Fiction, not a Historical Romance.
Forerunner and the Viking Karl she is given to, spend most of the book apart. She fights to stay away from him, and everything he stands for, in her eyes. Yet, as they both agree, neither can change Fate. From the standpoint of history, the book is rather inaccurate. The Russ, never wore horned helmets! When will people get over that stupidity? Yet, it is accurate depicting the drought which followed the sack of Lindesfarne. I read this while still a teenager, and reading while nearing the half-century mark, it holds a deeper more rich story.
I first read this book when I was in high school(about 58 years ago) and was pleased to be able to get a copy, and am now ordering a copy for my niece. It is my favorite book( i don't know how many times I've read it, but many, many times. It held my interest, and though at times it is sad, it is truly a wonderful book.
This is more a historical novel than a romance. To be honest, by the end, there is still very little love lost between Dorieann and Thorsten. Throughout the book, we see clues that he cares for her more than he’s letting on but she hides any feelings she might have as she plots for revenge. The book shows just how powerless most women of the time are and I can’t blame Dorieann for attempting to gain through stealth and guile a bit of it for herself. She’s essentially alone in her fight for her due from the clans and in trying to arrange her life to suit her. Almost all the men in her life attempt to use her to further their own plans or to gain her beauty for themselves. As one man she knows tells her, she is one of the three things men want in life power, wealth and a beautiful woman. Dorieann realizes early on that she must look after her own interests as no man will do it for her.
